What
is Maajabu?
Maajabu is a
non- profit organization focused on education through the use of film.
The power of the moving image is incredible and through film a message
can reach hundreds of people at a time. It is the intention to use this
medium to show people the wonder of the natural world, the environmental
issues we face and some of the ways in which we can help to solve these. |
How
we started?
The name
Maajabu, which means ‘amazing, wonderful’ in kiswahili, was
chosen to reflect the dynamic effect of film on people and its ability
to pass on incredible images. It was kick started by the initial donation
of a large screen, video projector and speakers through David Breashears,
a well known film director in the mountaineering world, after the making
of his Imax film ‘Kilimanjaro, To the Roof of Africa.’ |
 |
This
film, released in 2002, takes its viewers to the expansive slopes
of Mount Kilimanjaro where they can experience the exceptional climates
and landscapes of this mystical mountain. |

Who we are?
Maajabu is run by William Joseph and his assistant George Deo. They are
the small team that travel with the equipment and organize all the film
shows.
 |
William was born in Mpanda, western Tanzania and started
life as an acrobat. He then traveled looking for a life in Zambia
and Zaire and finally landed in Arusha. He started in the safari business
first as a casual labourer and when Maajabu got it's projector, William
started to help with the shows. Now William coordinates and organizes
all the film shows. He would like to learn more about communities
and environmental issues that affect these communities. William lives
in Arusha with his wife and daughter. |
